Younger Daughter turned 18 yesterday, and she really has done the growing up thing well.

Those who know her and Becca will possibly be unsurprised to hear that Becca arrived on the scene with full-blown, bells and whistles drama (emergency C-section, oxygen, very high risk of brain-damage or death), while Y.D.'s entry was less risky and quieter - though she did sing a little song when all of about 5 minutes old. She also had slightly pointy, slightly furry ears for a time, and quite an Elvish look.  Those who know them might be more surprised, however, to hear that Bec was a lap baby - totally content as long as she was being held. Y.D. was trying to go somewhere almost in her first week, and became much happier once able to do the locomotion to the lap herself.

From the age of about 3, she had powers of observation so acute that we knew a great future as a journalist was hers if she should want it, such an emotional insight into the behaviour of others, even when it was adversely affecting her, that an equally brilliant career as a psychiatrist was a dead cert, and could (still can) apologize for Ireland.  I take credit only for her pre-school teacher's goal (shared by the class-room aide) of finding a book that Y.D. hadn't read.  The rest is hers, and it's all good.

Will pass that on, thanks! She needs some kind of a time-slip to the other side of exams, so she can read for sheer fun again.

I'm looking forward to hearing about your recent reads AND spoiled dog. (Not that he is really, I'm sure...)
