Cannot come up with a snappy title for this entry, which has a lot to do with knitting, but is not book-contentless.
So, yesterday. Odd convergence going, or something. It started in the afternoon (well, yesterday didn't start in the afternoon) when I went to the post office to send off 2 balls of yarn to my sister in Kinvara, and a scarf to the OFA's Red Scarf Project. I just heard about this over the weekend, and certainly don't knit that fast, but happened to have one I made earlier to whip out of the oven and send. Of course when told about this project Older Daughter said 'Just like Daddy-Long-Legs!'. We all do love Daddy-Long-Legs in this family.... I was going to get some nice unisex lip balms to put in for a sort of winter survival package but she just looked at me pityingly and said 'No. Green and Blacks chocolate'. Which is probably the influence of Daddy-Long-Legs still, since she's addicted to lip balm, but D-L-L always makes her think of fudge. Is there any need left to recommend Daddy-Long-Legs, I wonder?
Last night, I was reading my blogs, and happily laughing at the conversation between Laurie and 3-month-old Evan in this post, when it finally hit me that she'd actually said the baby had a brain tumour. At which point I about fell off the computer chair. Laurie gave a link to the blog entry Allison (Evan's mother) wrote about the medical situation, and a link to Allison's eBay knitting (and more) shop. I couldn't even bring myself to read the blog until this morning, but managed to do some supportive shopping last night! Anyone who knits (or crochets, obviously) themselves, or has friends who do, especially friends with a birthday coming up anyway or something, might want to check it out. The surgery is counted as experimental, so insurance - well, everyone knows the rest of that... (And Allison wrote back incredibly quickly when I asked if she'd ship to Ireland, and again overnight, checking we really didn't have a postal code here. And prices are good!)
The next story is a happier one: Older Daughter came in from babysitting last night and found an email from Fantasy Magazine, to which she had submitted a story earlier yesterday. As their turn-around time is 6 weeks, she thought rejection must have been horribly instantaneous! But it was an acceptance - for an anthology they're doing called Fantasy (or possibly Fantasy (sampler)?)). Wow!
Okay, so aside from DLL, the promised books are only prospective books for me, in all honesty... In keeping with the knitting theme, I have Chicks with Sticks by Elizabeth Lenhard on the way here, though I can't for the life of me remember which blogger read it and liked it enough that I decided to order it: Google Blog Search doesn't help either.
And abandoning the theme (finally!), Magic or Madness by Justine Larbalestier and Undine by Penni Russon arrived earlier today. I do like the look of both - though I haven't started either yet. More, obviously, when I've done something other than admire the covers and nice fonts and all... (Oh, right, Bujold's The Hallowed Hunt also there, and also looking forward to reading that, but I certainly didn't admire its cover.)
It's not quite the score bookshelves of doom made [*twitches with addict's jealousy*], true, but still good....
