The "count-down" chapter titles sound rather like what Michael Morpurgo did in Private Peaceful, a book I admired a lot though unable to love it, and one a with very similar subject. Did MS mention that in the Author's Notes, by any chance? Or E. F. Benson's "The Bus-Conductor", which the audio clip evoked for me very strongly?
