A friend who visited the actual MSes is certain that the first half of Northanger reads with such brilliance while the second half is in effect a drawn-out single joke because she was rewriting it after she'd gotten several novels under her belt. But he doesn't pinpoint when...did she pick it up as recreation after she abandoned Watsons on the death of her father? Good questions.
